10/14/2015 - Hamilton Celebrates Animal Shelter Expansion with Grand Opening

Hamilton Celebrates Animal Shelter Expansion with Grand Opening

This morning, surrounded by animal shelter employees, local animal welfare organization representatives and some of the adoptable pets that call the shelter home, Mayor Kelly Yaede celebrated the completion of an expansion of the Hamilton Township Animal Shelter.

“Through this expansion project, we addressed a critical lack of capacity for the animals that find their ways to our shelter – and we did so in a cost-effective manner for our taxpayers,” explained Mayor Kelly Yaede.  “Thanks to our efforts, we will be able to continue safely caring for, and finding new homes for, these loving pet companions.”

In early 2014, Mayor Yaede first announced plans for an expansion of the Township’s Animal Shelter.  The facility was originally constructed in 1971 and received an addition in 1989.  However, over the following years, additional space for the local stray animal population became an increasingly critical need.

Thanks to the completed project, Hamilton Township was able to:

ü  Nearly double its number of dog kennels (from 20 kennels to 36 kennels)

ü  Double its room for stray cats (from 25 rooms to 50 rooms)

ü  Create a larger animal medical area

ü  Add private quarantine areas

ü  Build two new adoption rooms

ü  And add a needed grooming area

The expansion project was also a cost-effective way for Hamilton Township to increase its capacity for stray animals.  By adding the new wing, rather than building an entirely new facility, Hamilton Township saved an estimated $500,000 for its taxpayers.

Hamilton’s Animal Shelter (located at 2100 Sylvan Avenue, Hamilton, NJ 08610) is open Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Fridays from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.  Residents can also view some of the loving pets that are available for adoption by visiting:
