1/19/2016 - South Broad Street Bridge Replacement Project to Begin on Monday, February 1st

The below information is from the Mercer County Government regarding the replacement of a bridge along a portion of South Broad Street, which will begin on Monday, February 1, 2016.  Detour information is detailed below.

***Note for Residents in portions of Groveville and the Highlands neighborhood

Residents in portions of Groveville and the Highlands neighborhood attempting to travel Northbound on South Broad Street would be directed to first travel south on South Broad Street toward Crosswicks-Hamilton Square Road, then to turn left on Crosswicks-Hamilton Square Road, and then to follow the subsequent detour information listed below for Northbound traffic. 



TRENTON, N.J.—The Mercer County Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will start the replacement of the bridge on South Broad Street (CR 672) over Doctors Creek in Hamilton Township on Monday, February 1, 2016. This project is to be completed in a 165 calendar days, weather permitting.


The contractor will be installing on or about signs informing drivers that South Broad Street just east of Route 130 will be closed to through traffic at the bridge beginning February 1 for the duration of the project The detour for the northbound traffic will be right on Crosswicks - Hamilton Square Road, left on Yardville-Allentown (CR524) Road and left on Route 156. For Southbound traffic, left on Route 156, right on Yardville-Allentown (CR524) Road and right on Crosswicks - Hamilton Square Road. 


Officially known as Bridge #672.4 on South Broad Street, the structure is located between Route US 130 and Groveville-Allentown Road, Hamilton Township.


The existing bridge structure carrying South Broad over Doctors Creek is a two span, concrete encased steel beams supported on piles. The bridge is in serious condition due to the substructure defects that resulted in the bridge categorized as structurally deficient with a sufficiency rating of 49.8 on a scale of 0 to 100, with 100 being the best and 0 being the worst.


The replacement structure over Doctors Creek will be a single span structure supported on full height abutments.  The superstructure will consist of adjacent precast pre-stressed concrete box beams with a variable depth reinforced concrete deck composite section.  The substructure will be founded on pile foundations with permanent scour sheeting. The proposed cross section at the bridge will consist of two 12-foot travel lanes, two 8-foot shoulders and two 6-foot sidewalks. Cast-in-place concrete approach slabs will be constructed on both approaches to the bridge.


Simpson & Brown Inc. of West Cranford was the successful low bidder at $3,546,793.01.  The contract was awarded on December 10, 2015.
