8/1/2016 - Mayor Appoints US Marine to Hamilton Shade Tree Commission

Mayor Appoints US Marine to Hamilton Shade Tree Commission

To fill a vacant position on Hamilton’s Shade Tree Commission, Mayor Kelly Yaede has appointed a resident who previously served in the United States Marine Corps.

Yaede has selected Hamilton resident Gabriel “Gabe” Schick to serve as a member of the Hamilton Township Shade Tree Commission.

Schick, who served active duty in the United States Marine Corps from 1995 to 2000 as an Aircraft Mechanic, developed an interest in landscape plants and planting dating back to the summer following his high school graduation when he worked for a landscaping company in New Holland, PA.

Following his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, Schick’s interest in landscape plants was further cultivated during his studies at Rutgers University where he enjoyed a Landscape Plants elective course under Dr. Bruce Hamilton, who headed the university’s Landscape Architecture program and was a founder of Rutgers Gardens.  Over the years, Schick also briefly worked for Hamilton-based Angiolino & Sons Landscaping and has previously volunteered in a curbside tree planting initiative in Yardley, PA.

Currently Schick works as an insurance agent for Makefield Agency, Inc. and is licensed in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Schick has also served as an officer of the Trenton Marine Corps League Detachment #207.

“As someone who has long taken enjoyment in landscape plants - from past jobs, studies and simply planting and maintaining the landscaping in my own yard - I am very excited to have this opportunity to serve on our Township’s Shade Tree Commission and to help provide feedback and advice regarding the ongoing shade tree planting and forestry efforts that our community undertakes,” says Schick.  “I want to thank Mayor Yaede for appointing me to this position.”

“Beyond his honorable service to our nation in the United States Marine Corps, I am confident that Gabe’s experiences and genuine interest in landscape plants will make him an excellent contributor to our Shade Tree Commission, whose efforts have helped Hamilton Township retain our national ‘Tree City USA’ designation for ten consecutive years,” explains Mayor Yaede.

Schick’s appointment to the commission is a direct appointment by Mayor Yaede.

Hamilton’s Shade Tree Commission is an advisory commission that seeks to advise the Township in its efforts relative to the planting and care of shade and ornamental trees, as well as other landscape plantings that take place across public areas of the community.  Typical commission activities include providing assistance with Hamilton’s residential curbside tree planting program, giving feedback on other Township landscape planting initiatives and offering guidance in response efforts related to insect or disease threats to public trees.  Additionally, the commission will likely assist the Township in completing its first comprehensive street tree inventory initiative during the next year.
