6/24/2010 - Hamilton Congratulates Inspectors on a Job Well Done

(Hamilton) This afternoon, Hamilton Township Mayor John Bencivengo congratulated 6 members of the Hamilton Township Division of Inspections for their diligent efforts to protect the public safety of its residents.   Hamilton Housing Inspector Jerry DeBlasio, Housing Inspector Ken Skwara, and Chief Housing Inspector Michael Levach were honored for their tireless work in enforcing Hamilton’s Landlord Registration Ordinance, which has led to the identification of numerous, illegal rooming/boarding houses.  These properties had several safety code violations.   Hamilton Electrical Inspector Chris Binder, Electric Sub Code Official Frank Rotunda, and Electrical Inspector Paul Esposti were honored for their efforts in enforcing the state-wide Uniform Construction Code as it pertains to non-compliant installation of data communications (FiOS) by Verizon (which is the same code the applies to every town in the State of New Jersey).  These units often penetrate firewalls, which exists to protect residents.

PROCLAMATION

Whereas, the public health and safety is of paramount importance to any community, but especially to the residents of Hamilton Township; and

Whereas, in 2009 Hamilton Township enforced a bold initiative to protect the welfare of all Hamiltonians through its Landlord Registration Ordinance; and

Whereas, following its implementation, the Division of Inspections, under the direction of Community Planning & Compliance has actively enforced the provisions of this new law and successfully registered over 7000 rental units and uncovered over ten illegal rooming/boarding houses within the community; and

NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED, that I, John F. Bencivengo, Mayor of the Township of Hamilton, in the County of Mercer and State of New Jersey do hereby commend

……

HOUSING INSPECTOR

And thank him for his tireless efforts to protect the safety and welfare of the 92,000 residents of Hamilton Township.

PROCLAMATION

Whereas, within the past several months the Hamilton Township Division of Inspections, under the direction of Community Planning & Compliance has discovered the installation of data communications by Verizon in which the installer failed to properly obtain permits and inspections in accordance with statewide Department of Community Affairs regulations as all other utility companies, businesses and residents are required to do; and

Whereas, often times these installations pose serious public safety concerns because they breached fire rated walls, which exist to protect the public safety of the residents.  In fact, Hamilton Township has become aware of examples in which non-compliant installations have created public safety emergencies in Hamilton Township. Also,  in addition to revelations of NY State studies, as many as 60% of such installations in that State failed to meet the minimum code standards in existence to protect the public; and

Whereas, though the leadership of this division, Hamilton Township has boldly challenged a major utility company with a history of non compliant installations in several townships across the state of NJ; and

NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED, that I, John F. Bencivengo, Mayor of the Township of Hamilton, in the County of Mercer and State of New Jersey do hereby commend

                                                       ……..

                                              ELECTRICAL INSPECTOR
For his diligent efforts to enforce the statewide Uniform Construction Code regulations of NJ and protecting the residents of our community.
