Hamilton Township Marks Sikh Awareness Month

Recently, Mayor Kelly Yaede was joined by members of the local Sikh community to recognize April as Sikh Awareness Month.

Township officials believe that this may be the community’s first-ever recognition of Sikh Awareness Month.  At the recent ceremony to proclaim Sikh Awareness Month, Mayor Yaede was joined by Avtar Singh Heir, who is currently the President of The Central Jersey Sikh Association, as well as members of the Sikh American community.

Sikhism is a religion that originated in the Punjab region of India in the late 15th century.

April has been recognized as Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month in order to promote awareness of the Sikh faith, and to recognize the lasting contributions of the Sikh American community and to combat the increasing and unacceptable levels of anti-Sikh bigotry.

“Hamilton Township is proud to be a community where all people can practice their faiths and religious beliefs in peace; and I am very pleased to recognize the members of our local Sikh community for their many contributions to our nation and to help combat religious bigotry.”
