Hamilton Township will Fly American Flags at Half Staff in Honor of Fallen Local Soldiers Lt. Omar Vazquez and Sgt. Keith Buzinski on Thursday, May 5, 2011.  Below is the Executive Order by Mayor John Bencivengo:

Executive Order 11-02

Flags to be Flown at Half Staff in Honor of Sacrifices of Lt. Omar Vazquez and Sgt. Keith Buzinski on Thursday, May 5, 2011

Whereas, the brave members of our United States military serve our nation with courage and honor, placing themselves directly in harm’s way to defend our nation, prevent attacks against our people and to promote freedom across our entire world; and 

Whereas, because of the duty that our military personnel freely and selflessly undertake by their noble calling, they undergo many sacrifices to provide our citizens with freedom, liberty, the opportunity for the pursuit of happiness, and peace; and

Whereas, because of the serious risk to safety and life as a result of their services, some soldiers make the ultimate sacrifice by losing their life to protect and defend the lives of all Americans and of citizens around the world in search of freedom and peace; and

Whereas, United States Army Sergeant Keith Buzinski, honorably served in the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 11th Mountain Division based at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and was deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan; and     

Whereas, Sergeant Buzinski grew up in Hamilton Township, attending our community’s public schools prior to moving to Florida in 2004.  He was known as a warm and humorous child, who grew into a man who cared deeply about his family and his service in the military; and     

Whereas, after 14 months of service in Iraq between September 2007 and November 2008, Sergeant Buzinski was stationed in Louisiana where he met his wife, Andrea, whom he married two months before being deployed to Afghanistan; and

Whereas, on April 7, 2011, Sergeant Buzinski and his unit were attacked by Afghan insurgents in the Logar province of Afghanistan, when he gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country; and    

Whereas, United States Army Lieutenant Omar Vazquez, honorably served in Operation New Dawn with Fox Troop, 2nd Squadron in the 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment based at Fort Hood, Texas, and was deployed on his first tour of duty in Iraq, stationed in Al Kut; and  

Whereas, Lieutenant Vazquez, was the youngest of four children and was known for his intellect and leadership skills, overcoming his affliction with asthma, demonstrated a passion to serve our nation in the Armed forces.  After September 11, 2001, he decided to answer our nation’s highest call to service; and

Whereas, He graduated from McCorristin Catholic High School (now Trenton Catholic Academy) in 2003, earned an associate degree from Mercer County Community College, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Rider University in 2007 and Master’s in Liberal Studies from Rutgers University – Camden in 2009; and    

Whereas, At the age of 11, Lieutenant Vazquez joined a local ROTC program and years later served at a Leader’s Training Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky, to assist ROTC cadets; and

Whereas, On April 21, 2011, Lieutenant Vazquez made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation as his convoy was struck by an improvised explosive device in Iraq; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOHN F. BENCIVENGO, Mayor of Township of Hamilton, in the County of Mercer and the State of New Jersey, do hereby ORDER and DIRECT:

1. The flag of the United States of America shall be flown at half staff at all Township government buildings, offices, and instrumentalities during appropriate hours on Thursday, May 5, 2011, in recognition of the life and mourning of the passing of both Lt. Omar Vazquez and Sgt. Keith Buzinski

 2. This Order shall take effect immediately
