Hamilton St Patrick’s Day Parade and Scholarship Committee Selects Mayor John Bencivengo as 2012 Parade Grand Marshal

Saying he was honored and truly humbled to have been chosen by the members of the Hamilton St Patrick’s Day Parade and Scholarship Committee to be the 2012 Parade Grand Marshal, Hamilton Township Mayor John Bencivengo today accepted the nomination at the committee’s annual Parade Grand Marshal announcement ceremony.

With this year’s theme “An Irish Tribute to America’s Favorite Hometown”, the parade will take place on Saturday, March 10, 2012, along the same route as last year’s parade – beginning at the Nottingham Fire Company parking lot, walking down Mercer Street and then down Nottingham Way (towards Mercerville’s Five Points intersection) ending at Getz Avenue.

Noting that it is not a requirement for the Grand Marshal to be of Irish decent, the Hamilton St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Scholarship Committee explained that the most important factor is what the recipient has done for the betterment of the Irish-American community.    In making the selection, the committee commended Mayor Bencivengo’s efforts to assist and cooperatively work with the committee in its decision to move the parade to Hamilton Township from its previous route in Trenton.

“With a name like ‘Bencivengo’, it is probably not a big surprise to learn that I am not an Irish-American.  But, to me, that is why being selected as the 2012 St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal is so special to me,” explained Mayor Bencivengo, who spoke about many local Irish Americans and former St. Patrick Day Parade Grand Marshals who have helped build and contribute to the Hamilton Township we know and enjoy today.  “Count me, as one of the many non-Irish Americans, who appreciate what countless men and women of Irish heritage have contributed to the Hamilton Township we all know, and love. Count me, as an Italian American, who has been blessed and very fortunate to have so many Irish Americans as friends and as special people in my own personal life. And count me, as someone who was very happy when the Hamilton St Patrick’s Day Parade and Scholarship Committee decided to hold their wonderful parade in Hamilton Township; because I and many other non-Irish Hamiltonians were eager and very pleased to welcome this great celebration with open arms!”
