Statement Regarding the Sandy Hook Elementary School Tragedy in Newtown, CT from Mayor Kelly A. Yaede (12-17-2012)
Our entire community, along with our nation, continues to mourn the loss of innocent life from the senseless tragedy that occurred in Newtown, Connecticut, last week.
The tragic events of this past Friday, which claimed the lives of 26 people, including 20 children, once again reminds us of the horrific evil that exists in our world today. We are also reminded that such acts can happen anywhere. The senseless murder of innocent individuals has no place in a civilized society and we must continue to work to prevent such things, whatever the cause, from happening again.
Although the wounds are fresh and the sorrow is great, we cannot forget the young lives that were lost last Friday and the heroism, bravery and sacrifice that was shown by individual teachers and school officials in protecting the children they were so dedicated to teaching. In time the wounds will begin to heal, and, although they may never heal completely, we must be sure to remember that born of this tragedy were acts of goodness and light.
Each of those souls that were taken away from us much too soon has left a legacy that is up to us to fulfill. It is up to all of us to ensure that these lives were not lost in vain and that days such as this will never happen again.
