[ARCHIVED] Statement from Mayor Martin on a Hamilton Township Police Officer

This week, a Hamilton Township Police Officer and their spouse, a Mercer County Sheriff’s Officer, were charged with crimes of sexual abuse and child endangerment.  These actions are not only abhorrent but have also shaken our community’s sense of security and trust in those who are sworn to protect us. While those feelings are understandable, let me be clear: the despicable actions of these individuals do not define our community or the dedication and integrity of the men and women who serve and protect us every day.

We have taken swift action to uphold the safety and well-being of our community.  Working with our Police Chief, we have suspended the police officer without pay and served a notice of termination.  We have coordinated with the Hamilton Township School District to ensure any child who needs support receives it.  We reflect inward as your township government to learn from this episode while continuing to fully cooperate with the New Jersey State Police on this investigation to ensure justice is served.

Processing emotions from such a disturbing event takes time -- I feel them as deeply as you do and my commitment remains unwavering: Hamilton Township will continue to be a safe, strong, and resilient place to live, work, and raise a family.
